The girls had a blast making these recently at our church cooking club. And with a week-plus of crazy schedules and travel ahead of us, making several more batches over the weekend seemed like an easy solution to upcoming days of meals-on-the-go. Add a container of frozen grapes and we’ve got a road-trip-ready breakfast; some carrot sticks and baby tomatoes, and we’re set for a quick picnic lunch or supper.

Crescent Roll Recipes Your Whole Family Will Love

Servings vary; prep time approx. 5 minutes; bake time approx. 10-15 minutes; total time approx. 15-20 minutes

What you need:

  • One or more cans of ready-to-bake crescent roll dough
  • One or more of the topping combinations listed below
  • A baking sheet (lining it with aluminum foil or parchment paper will make for easy cleanup)
  1. Preheat oven according to package directions. Open the can of dough and unroll it on your lined baking sheet. Separate the pieces along the perforations. For bite-sized mini-crescents, cut each triangle in half again the long way, to make two narrow triangular strips.

    Chocolatine (pain au chocolat) minis

  2. Put your choice of filling on each triangle. For spready fillings, spread a thin layer on the entire triangle. For solid fillings, place 1-2 T (1/2 to 1 T for mini crescents) of filling at the wider end of the triangle. And for combinations involving both, spread first and then add the solids.
  3. Roll each crescent up from the wide end to the narrow end; tuck up ends of each roll as needed.
  4. Bake according to package directions, or approximately 10-15 minutes per sheet, until rolls are slightly browned. Allow to cool slightly before eating, or cool completely and eat at room temperature. Store leftovers in the refrigerator until ready to eat.
  5. To prepare several days in advance of eating: Cool completely before storing in an airtight container; refrigerate or freeze promptly.

Useful tools to consider:

Besides the parchment paper, there are a few other tools that (while optional) will make your prep easier. A mandoline is great for thin-slicing the apples and onions. And the mincer attachment on our immersion blender (or any other mini-mincer) works well for chopping up the ham and herbs.

Tucking in the end under my thumb, before tucking in the end by my pinky

Pain au Chocolat (Chocolatine): A breakfast classic in France (where it goes by the former name), Quebec (where it goes by the latter), and elsewhere. Mound 2T semisweet chocolate chips at the wide end of the dough, roll up, and tuck in the ends.

Just Jam: Put 1-2 T of your favorite jam onto the wide end of the roll, spreading just enough up to the narrow end to lightly cover the dough (leaving most of the jam at the wide end). Roll, and tuck ends over to enclose the jam.

Jam & Granola: Before rolling up “Just Jam,” sprinkle a little granola over the wide end of the dough, on top of the jam.

Honey & Nut: Spread a very thin layer of honey over the entire length of the dough, then sprinkle your chopped nuts of choice at the wide end before rolling. Tuck in ends.

Baked Apple: Spread a very thin layer of maple syrup over the entire length of the dough, then place several thin slices of apple at the wide end. Sprinkle with a few raisins and chopped walnuts at the wide end, a dash of cinnamon over the length of the dough, and roll.

Spicy ham & cheese, a variation on my favorite cafe lunch in Paris (Croque Monsieur)

In addition to Ham & Cheese above:

Spicy Ham & Cheese (Croque Monsieur): Under the ham and cheese (see above), spread a thin layer (just at the wide end) of dijon mustard. Optional: top with minced fresh chives before rolling, or lay on a single blade or two of fresh chive before rolling. Swiss or Provolone cheese are also good options to go with the ham, in addition to cheddar.

Classic Pigs-in-a-Blanket: Fold a slice of American cheese in half diagonally, making two triangles. Cut a hotdog in half across the middle, then cut each half into quarters lengthwise (making eight long wedge-shaped pieces). Layer two cheese triangles on the wide end of the dough, with points aiming toward the narrow end. Place two hot-dog wedges on top of the cheese triangles before rolling. Tuck under ends. Dip in ketchup for serving, if desired.

Spicy Piggies: Spread a thin layer (on wide end only) of dijon, spicy brown, or hot mustard. Then follow the recipe for Classic Pigs-in-a-Blanket (above). Dip in ketchup or additional mustard for serving, if desired.

Ham & Chive: Spread a thin layer of cream cheese over the entire piece of dough before topping with finely diced ham at the wide end. Sprinkle fresh chopped chives over the entire length before rolling.

Onion & Herb: Spread a thin layer of cream cheese over the entire piece of dough before topping with very thinly sliced red onion (use a mandoline for best results) at the wide end, then sprinkling lightly with assorted fresh chopped herbs (chives, parsley, rosemary, basil, oregano, or whatever you have on hand) over the entire length of the dough before rolling.

Pepperoni Pizza

*My girls’ favorite* Pepperoni Pizza: Spread a very thin layer of pizza sauce or tomato sauce over the entire surface of dough. Layer several slices of pepperoni at the wide end, then top the pepperoni with shredded mozzarella or Italian cheese blend. Sprinkle the entire surface lightly with Italian seasoning before rolling.

Cheesy Garlic Knots: Brush the entire surface with melted unsalted butter. Then sprinkle the entire surface lightly with grated or shredded Parmesan cheese. Sprinkle the entire surface very lightly with garlic salt before rolling.

Classic Tuna Melt: Drain a can of water-packed tuna well. Spread a thin layer of mayonnaise over the entire surface of the dough, put a small mound of tuna at the wide end, and top the tuna with your shredded cheese of choice before rolling.

Bean Burrito: Spread a very thin layer of refried beans over the entire length of the roll. Then top the wide end with shredded cheese and (optional) a thin slice of ripe avocado before rolling. Serve with salsa and/or guacamole for dipping.

S’Mores #1 minis

Sweet Treat Dessert/Snack Crescent Roll Recipes

Classic PB&J: Spread a thin layer of peanut butter over the entire length of the roll, then top with an even thinner layer of your jam of choice before rolling. Tuck in the ends as best you can. (Warning; this one will get messier than most, but is worth it!)

S’Mores #2 Minis

*Our family’s favorite* S’Mores, Two Ways: Mound semi-sweet chocolate chips at the wide end of the dough, top with an equal-sized pile of mini or micro-mini marshmallows, roll, and tuck in the ends. Or, spread a thin coat of Nutella over the entire piece of dough, before topping the wide end with marshmallows and rolling. We tried making these both ways, and can’t decide which we like better! (The marshmallows will melt completely, so don’t skimp on them!)

*Kimmie’s other favorite* Classic Apple Pie: Core an apple, cut into quarters, and slice each quarter into very thin wedge-shaped slices. Layer several slices of apple at the wide end of dough, sprinkle the entire length with cinnamon-sugar mixture or apple pie spice, roll, and (optional) sprinkle a little additional spice mixture on top before baking.

*Essie’s other favorite* Peach Cobbler: Remove the pit from a ripe peach, cut into quarters, and then slice each quarter into very thin wedge-shaped slices. Layer several slices of peach at the wide end. Then sprinkle the entire length lightly with brown sugar and roll. Sprinkling a little additional brown sugar on top before baking is optional.

Place a small mound of chocolate chips, a small pile of fresh blueberries (washed and well dried), layered thin slices of fresh strawberry, or a small pile of fresh raspberries (washed and well dried) at the wide end of the dough before rolling.

Chocolate Raspberry: Spread a thin layer of Nutella (or your favorite chocolate-nut spread) over the entire length of the dough, pile a small mound of fresh raspberries (washed and well dried) at the wide end, and roll. SO good!
