Why Custom Blinds for Windows?

So you’ve finally scraped together the money for those replacement windows your house has been begging you for. Congratulations! – I bet your energy bills are already thanking you. But now you’ve got bare windows, and you’re missing your privacy. Which means it’s time to get some new window treatments onto your windows.

But who has the time for that?

Yesterday was the 16-year anniversary of our closing on our current home, which desperately needed all its windows replaced when we first bought it – something we finally got done this past spring. Because we knew that new windows were coming at some point, we only replaced the existing plastic blinds on our windows as they broke. In some cases, like Kimmie’s south-facing room, we invested first in fancy room-darkening shades from Major Home Improvement Chain; the springs inside failed within a few years. Then we got fancy honeycomb blinds cut to fit from the same store; those also stopped going up and down a few years later.

Frankly, I was sick of spending money (not to mention my time!) measuring windows, going to the store, getting a product cut to size, bringing it home, installing it, and having it break a couple of years later.

Solution: Custom Window Treatments from a reputable installer

That’s why, when we finally got our new windows installed this past spring, we decided to get custom window treatments for our replacement windows. Yes, the upfront cost of custom blinds for windows was higher than buying cut-to-fit window treatments from Major Home Improvement Chain down the road. But it was soooooooo worth it.

If you’re hesitant to invest in custom window treatments for your home, or not sure where to start, here’s a step-by-step buying guide, based on our experiences.

Yes, custom window treatments are going to cost more upfront. But consider these benefits over the DIY off-the-shelf-from-Local-Home-Improvement-Chain store, which I’d argue make them the MORE cost-effective choice in the end:

• You don’t have to do all the measuring yourself.
• You KNOW the measurements will be done correctly the first time, eliminating potential costly mistakes.
• You don’t have to either hunt for a store employee to cut their off-the-shelf products to size for you, or figure out how to cut each one to size by yourself at home. (And again, no risk of costly mistakes.)
• You don’t have to spend your time installing each one by yourself.
• Because the installation is being done by pros who do this every day, you know your entire house’s new window coverings will be installed (correctly, the first time!) in a morning – versus it taking you that long to do just a few windows (since I’m guessing, like me, this is NOT something you do every day!).

And best of all,

• With a reputable company, your new window treatments will come with a LIFETIME guarantee against breaking or failing! (Note: Look for this when choosing a company to go with for your custom window treatment project!) Trust me, this is so, SO much better than your enthusiastic tween constantly raising/lowering their window coverings, then complaining to you every other year that the mechanisms that hold said coverings at the correct height are broken and the whole thing needs replacing, again. (Been there, done that. Multiple times, in fact.)

Dear Husband was nervous about the cost of purchasing custom window coverings for our new windows; but once I pointed out to him the long-term value of doing this once and being done with it, with far fewer hours invested by either of us in actually doing the work, he agreed that this was really the only way to go.

And besides there being so many options available for every price point and aesthetic, our new custom window treatments are also way safer than the vinyl blinds in place when we bought the house. (You know, the kind with strings – which can be a choking hazard for small children unless you tie the strings up high or cut them short.) Not to mention that they’re so much easier to keep clean.

Custom Window Treatment Options for Your Home

There are several options you’ll need to consider when choosing your new window treatments. Besides the overall look, function, and materials, you’ll need to think about color and opacity. Here are some of the choices available, and what we selected:

Insulating cellular or “honeycomb” blinds

Since we had done a few early window covering replacements with honeycomb blinds and liked the look, this is what we chose for most of our home. Also known as cellular blinds, these blinds are actually two or more layers thick; the layers are attached to each other at regular intervals, creating a “honeycomb” pattern when looked at from the side.

This design creates air pockets between the layers, similar to the insulating effects of wearing multiple layers of clothing when it’s cold outside. These extra layers can help insulate the temperatures inside your house from the temperatures outside your house, which helps prevent heat loss in winter and heat entry in summer. This additional insulation can, in turn, help trim your energy bills by cutting down on drafts and energy loss.

Cellular blinds, like roller shades, come in a variety of color choices (see the picture below of our bedroom blinds) and opacity levels (how much light the blinds allow through). The higher the opacity, the less light will come in – and the less outsiders can see what’s going on inside your house after dark. For most of our new cellular blinds, we chose 30% opacity, which struck the right balance for us between letting light in and keeping our family life private from prying eyes. (My husband is especially freaked out by the surveillance potential of our assorted neighbors’ Ring doorbell cameras, and I can see his point.)

Faux Wood Blinds for a polished look with minimal upkeep

If you really prefer the idea of traditional louvered blinds, consider blinds made with faux wood. These wood-like products provide the classic, polished look of wood; but unlike actual wood, they won’t warp, change color over time, or deteriorate with moisture (say, in a bathroom or other humid environment). And they’re super-easy to clean; just wipe them down with a damp cloth to remove accumulated dust.

Compared to actual wood blinds, faux wood blinds are much more cost-effective, though we also found them to be more expensive than the cellular blinds and roller shades we purchased instead. You also will need to be aware of those strings if you’ve got small children around. Still, though, you can’t beat the classic look of wood (even if it’s fake wood). And they also come in a wide assortment of colors.

Speaking of roller shades, that leads to our next choice – a solid choice for home environments (particularly bedrooms and kitchens) as well as commercial spaces:

Fire Retardant Shades for Customized Light Control and Energy Efficiency

Besides your budget (do you want top-of-the-line or value-friendly?), there are several other choices you’ll need to make when ordering your new custom window blinds or other window treatments:

• Opacity: How much light do you want to let in? For cellular blinds and roller shades, opacity choices range from 10% (lots of light coming in, but also easy to see what’s going on inside – maybe not the best choice for front-facing bedrooms) to 100% (impossible to see through, but also let in no outside light when drawn). Other in-between points, such as 30% and 60% opacity, are also available. When coming to your home for a consultation (which is usually free!), your sales representative should bring samples of the different choices, so you can get a sense of them.

• Thermal insulation capacity: The more opaque choices tend to provide more insulation than the less opaque choices. If this is important for you – say, for north-facing bedrooms that run cold in the winter – be sure to ask about this as you’re considering your options.
• Color, material, and overall aesthetic: Different choices have different color options. For most of our home, we went with white or nearly-white for our new custom blinds. But for our master bedroom, we chose cellular blinds tinted slightly blue on the inside, to match the rest of the room’s classic decor.

• Automated window treatments? For a truly custom experience, consider auto-adjusting shades or blinds, which allow precise control of natural light, helping reduce glare and regulate indoor brightness. And finally,

• Top-down or top-down/bottom-up operation? Most of us are used to window treatments that can only operate in one direction (top-down). But if you have large windows (like our dining room) and want to maximize light in AND privacy, or if you regularly open windows both at top and bottom, then consider getting blinds that can operate in both directions. This is what we did for our dining room (see pictures at the beginning and end of this post), whose oversized windows provide our neighbor’s Ring camera a front-row seat to everything happening both in our family dinner space, and in the kitchen behind, especially during long dark winter nights. (Which, as I’ve noted, really unnerves Dear Husband.)

Best blinds for bedroom:

When choosing custom blinds for bedrooms, think about light, privacy, and insulation. If you’re a put-the-blinds-up-each-morning kind of family, you may prefer a blackout blinds bedroom. If darkness and privacy are as important as aesthetics, a wooden blinds bedroom may also be right for you.

On the other hand, if your bedrooms face north and south, as in our house, temperature control may also be high on your list, making thermal blinds or shades a key part of insulating your bedroom. Or perhaps you’ve already invested in thermal room darkening curtains (as we had), in which case you can go for blinds that let in more light.

Best window treatments for kitchens:

When choosing the best kitchen window treatments, your own personal needs may vary greatly from one home to the next. The home where I grew up had east-facing kitchen windows overlooking a forest, so our kitchen window roller blinds were only down occasionally, when we didn’t want the rising sun in our eyes at breakfast. On the other hand, Dear Husband’s childhood kitchen looked right into the neighbor’s house less than ten feet away, so their kitchen blinds were down 24/7.

Light-blocking and privacy are important in kitchens, but so are ease of cleaning and flame resistance. If your window treatments will be down all the time, choosing something easy to clean (like faux wood blinds) is crucial, since airborne bits of cooking oils can attract dust over time and be harder to remove from other types of window treatments. This will make your window blinds kitchen choice easy, and save you maintenance for years to come.

How to choose blinds for other rooms:

Again, think about how the different members of your family use a given room, and let function guide your choices when ordering custom blinds for windows. For example, our basement guest space is part of a large L-shaped finished basement area, with one end partially sectioned off for guest quarters by room dividers. Because the other side of the room includes walk-out French-style basement doors, yet we still wanted privacy for our guests, we chose full-length honeycomb blinds that let lots of light through while also offering privacy.

Similarly, the window by the kids’ homework station in the living room has a low-opacity cellular blind that admits plenty of light, while minimizing distractions from things going on outside the window. By filtering outdoor light, the cellular blind on this window also cuts down on glare for both the kids’ computer screens, and anyone watching TV.

And again, if you’re looking for even greater control over light and privacy, you may also want to consider motorized window treatment systems. In addition to making it easier to open and close blinds throughout the day, these systems can be programmed to adjust automatically based on sunlight levels or preset schedules. This can help reduce glare, improve indoor comfort, enhance privacy, and support energy efficiency by limiting excessive heat gain during warmer months and helping retain warmth during cooler seasons.
