Have you traveled with your kids much yet? If not, what’s holding you back? Especially when the economy is rocky, finances are a top hurdle for families who want to travel together.

I’ve written elsewhere on specific ways to save money traveling with every age from infants to teens, but this post is going to focus more on a broad overview of budget-conscious travel tips you and your family can use to help bring family vacations and adventures more within your reach.

Money-Saving Travel Tips for Budget-Conscious Families:

1. How Can I Find The Cheapest Flights And Accommodation?

Use flight comparison tools and set price alerts several months in advance. The best deals are typically found 3-6 months before departure for international flights, and 1-3 months for domestic travel. Being flexible with your departure dates and considering nearby airports can lead to significant savings. And don’t be afraid to travel a bit to your nearest international airport for major savings on both flights and scheduling time. It may be worth driving a few hours further to score major savings on multiple plane tickets, and the money you save will more than cover your hotel park-n-fly package.

For accommodation, consider alternative options like hostels, guesthouses, or house-sitting. Book refundable rooms and keep checking prices; if they drop, cancel and rebook. Join loyalty programs and sign up for hotel newsletters to access member-only rates and special promotions.

Another shortcut to saving money on both airfare and lodging is to travel during the off season. I’ll never forget the family trip Dear Husband and I took our then-preschoolers on to Cape Cod one September. Because school was barely back in session, the weather was still gorgeous, and many of the summer touristy spots remained open for us and the handful of other visitors – but prices were much less expensive, and everything was much less crowded, than if we’d been there just a few weeks before.

2. What About Ways to Save on Activities When We Get There?

In our experience, balancing advance planning with flexibility is the way to go here. For example, many big cities will have special travel passes that give you a discounted bundle on many popular tourist attractions. These can be a super deal – but only if they’re for attractions that your family is actually interested in seeing!

If there’s one “big” experience you have your hearts set upon – for example, a particular theme park or a night out at the theater – then start your planning and budgeting there. (Which days/nights of the week offer the best ticket prices or smallest crowds? Are there advantages to buying tickets the night before instead of in person that day? Can you save even more by buying online before you leave home?)

As you fill in other activities around that big “bucket list” item, you can balance activities with periods of rest and downtime. Not only will these interludes offer a much-needed break, they’re also much less expensive than trying to do several big-ticket tourist items per day. Even my teenagers were ready for a nap by mid-afternoon most days when we went to London last year! Chill time in a park, walking through a public garden, checking out the sights and shops near your hotel, or just sitting and people-watching are all low- to no-cost ways to build in some downtime.

3. What Are The Best Money-Saving Strategies For Different Travel Destinations?

When traveling to expensive destinations like Western Europe or Japan, focus on accommodation costs by using home-sharing platforms or staying in suburbs with good public transportation links. Look for city passes that bundle attractions and transportation, and research free walking tours and museum days.

For destinations in Southeast Asia or South America, the biggest savings often come from smart transportation choices. Consider night buses for longer journeys to save on accommodation, and use local transportation instead of tourist-oriented services. Street food and local markets are not only authentic experiences but also budget-friendly dining options.

4. What Are Some Hidden Costs Of Travel That Can Blow My Budget?

ATM fees and foreign transaction charges can add up quickly. Consider getting a travel-friendly credit card with no foreign transaction fees, as well as a debit card that reimburses ATM charges. Also, factor in costs like travel insurance, visa fees, and mandatory tourist taxes that some destinations charge upon arrival.

And think about all those little daily expenses at home that add up, like spontaneous snack runs; then make strategies ahead of time to avoid them. One of the first things I put on every family packing list I make is a reusable water bottle or two per person, so we can all bring beverages with us wherever we go. I also pack some prepackaged airport- and customs-friendly snacks to get us started on our trip (small packets of nuts and crackers, granola bars, etc.).

Once we reach our destination, it’s fun to explore local snacks, such as all the exotic-to-us flavors of potato chips we find in the U.K. But we try to locate a local supermarket early in our trip to stock up on local snacks, rather than having to pay inflated prices at tourist site cafeterias.

5. What Are The Most Common Budget-Breaking Mistakes To Avoid?

Cramming in too much

One common error any families make when traveling is trying to see too many places in a short time. This is especially true when traveling with a family in tow, because little kids (and even big kids!) may not have as much stamina as you do for getting from point A to point B to point C. Frequent movement between destinations increases transportation costs and reduces opportunities for weekly or monthly accommodation discounts. And rather than trying to cram multiple sites into each day, consider just one or two and allow your littles some downtime to relax.

Not researching the best ground transport options

Forgetting to do your homework ahead of time – not just for the best prices on flights and rooms, but also for ground transport and attractions – can also cost you dearly. Before you reach your destination, you should have a clear sense of how you’re going to get to your lodging and how you’re going to get around from day to day.

If there’s good public transport available, figure out the most cost-effective passes for each age of traveler in your group. If you’ve got a large family group, passenger van rentals may be a good bet in areas without great public transport. That car that “holds 6” may leave room for your travelers, but not for them AND their luggage!

Forgetting to track your spending

Lastly, many travelers overspend on souvenirs and shopping early in their trip, leaving them short on funds for experiences later. Instead, save shopping for the end of your journey, skip the touristy tchotchkes, and focus on creating memories through experiences.

It’s also a good idea to have a phone app or pocket notebook to track what you spend throughout each day. If you find you’re regularly going over your daily food budget, you can pare back or rethink your choices (e.g., not buy so many spontaneous snacks while out).

Not planning your food

Eating out three meals a day times an entire family can quickly become both expensive and wasteful. There are a few ways to avoid this trap, with some careful planning:

• Finding lodging with a refrigerator and microwave, or access to a small kitchenette, can allow you to have at least some meals in your room (for example, breakfasts or a light supper) instead of at restaurants.
• Hotels with all-inclusive packages in resort areas could end up saving you a ton of money on food and drink.
• Looking at hostels, home-swaps, and house rentals can allow you to cook more (or at least prepare breakfast and lunch in your room) and thereby eat out less.
• And especially if you’ve got hungry teens or tweens, a hotel with a full breakfast included can give you a solid start to the day. Between a big breakfast and a hearty lunch, you may be able to avoid large restaurant dinners, which can easily be the priciest meal of the day.

Finally, don’t be afraid to have some light meals out (especially evening meals!) from a food truck or street cart, depending on where you are. My first time in Paris, my most memorable meal out with my mama was the night we got crepes from a street cart and ate them in front of the Eiffel Tower. And when Kimmie got sick during our trip to London, some grab-and-go sandwiches one night from the local corner store (with a cup of soup for Kimmie) made the perfect hotel room picnic.

Taking The First Step Towards Budget Travel

Now that you understand the fundamentals of budget travel and how to avoid common pitfalls, it’s time to start planning your first budget-friendly family trip. Begin by setting up price alerts for flights to three potential destinations you’re interested in visiting, and commit to tracking these prices for at least two weeks to get a sense of typical fare ranges and fluctuations. This will help you start to build your budget for your first big families budget trip!
