Greetings from the wilderness! Dear Hubby, the girls, and I are off camping, so I’m super-glad that fellow blogger Cori Ramos was willing to write this guest post for while I’m away! Working from home is the ultimate hack for busy parents. And when it comes to work-at-home opportunities that are both legit AND profitable, Cori has this market cornered. Hence I’m thrilled that she has compiled this amazing list of ways to make money from your humble abode. If you’ve ever thought it was time to kiss your own personal workplace prison goodbye, you have no excuse NOT to start planning your exit after reading Cori’s guest post! And do please leave her questions and comments, if you have any – she’ll be keeping an eye on them while I’m away, and responding directly!
Hi y’all, I’m Cori.
I can’t tell you how stoked I am to be able to talk to you about my favorite topic: how to make money from home.
What was once thought of as a fad has now become a new way of living.
In the 7 years I’ve been blogging about working from home, I’ve seen this industry grow leaps and bounds. And it’s only getting better as you’re about to find out.
But before I get into the great money makers you can do from home, let me tell you how I started blogging about work-from-home opportunities.
In 2007, I quit my job in corporate America after years of working long hours and never seeing my family. At that time, I had no inkling as to what I wanted to do. I knew I had to work – there was no question about that. But I was tired of the daily commute, 12-hour days and making money for someone else.
When I started searching for a new job, I came across a website that shared how to make money from home. At first I was skeptical about it. You see, I had never heard of someone working from home so right away I thought it was a scam.
But the more I looked into it the more I started to realize that this could be the real deal. I was getting excited about that fact that I could make money from home and be with my family.
During one of my job searches I came across a job listing that said I could make as much as $1,000 a week and I was like heck yeah – jackpot! But that turned out to be a total scam.
I can’t tell you how disappointed I was and I was a little embarrassed that I had actually fell for that crap. So my search continued but then something happened.
I soon started sharing what I found with friends and family and I loved the feeling I got knowing I was helping someone make their life better.
Then I read an article about blogging and how people were making money by publishing content on a website.
So in 2011, I decided to launch a blog to share work-from-home jobs, home-based businesses, and side hustles with other mamas.
And I’ve been doing it ever since!
Four Ways To Make Money Without Leaving Your House
There are plenty of remote work ideas for moms and I’m about to share 4 great money makers with you here.
And what’s more is that these home-based careers can add balance for working mamas who want the best of both worlds.
Let’s take a look at the careers and business you can do from home.
1. Start A Home-based Business
There are many benefits to starting a home-based business such as creating your own hours, low cost start-up capital and the obvious, no office space to rent.
Women are especially taking advantage and have given the meaning to the word entrepreneur…it’s more like mompreneur.
These women are taking their talents and hobbies and turning in to a money making business.
And if you look in sites like Etsy and Shopify, you’ll find these are the most popular items these ladies are making and selling:
- Crafts
- Printables
- Jewelery
- Accessories like belts, scarves
- Clothing
But if you don’t want the hassle of dealing with inventory, you can start a direct sales buisness or a drop ship business and let the merchandiser handle worry about the inventory.
2. Start An Online Business
Online businesses are trending big time right now. You don’t need a big budget to get on started and you can run it virtually anywhere – as long as you have a laptop and internet connection.
Take a look at these popular online business start-ups.
Blogging Business
There are literally millions of blogs around the world. Mom bloggers are taking the blogosphere by storm and making serious bank blogging.
The most popular niches are:
- Food
- Lifestyle
- Parenting
- Coupon
- Finance
- Fashion
- Travel
As far as making money goes, here are some ways bloggers monetize their blog.
A. Freelance Writing
If you do have a knack for it you should try freelance writing. As a freelance writer you get to choose the topics you want to write about – as long as you have some know-how about it.
Here are some sites to fine freelance writing gigs:
B. Other ways to make money as a freelance writer:
- Add a “hire me” page on your website
- Pitch letters to potential clients
- Advertise you’re for hire on social media
C. Influencer Marketing
Big brands now recognize how much influence a blogger has and they are willing to pay bloggers like you to promote their products.
As an influencer you market a brand’s product in the form of a blog post or social media post.
Here is a list of Influencer Networks to connect with your favorite brands:
D. Affiliate Marketing
As an affiliate you make money by promoting brands. This can be in the form of a blog post, social media post, banner ads, and email marketing promos.
The difference between an affiliate and influencer is that as an affiliate, you won’t work directly with a brand. Instead become a member of an affiliate network and connect with brands through that platform.
Some popular affiliate networks are:
Rakuten Marketing (Linkshare)
Sponsored Content
You can also sign up to sites that pay $25 to $100+ to publish their content on your site. Sites like Guest Crew, BlogDash, Valued Voice and PostJoint offer paid content for bloggers.
Selling Digital Products
- Design custom websites
- Become a graphics designer and sell custom logos, headers, etc.
- You can create a profitable online course
- Writing eBooks
Virtual Assistant
As a virtual assistant, you can connect with clients from across the globe. You determine the number of clients you want to support so you’ll be able to work around a schedule that’s best for you.
My friend Suzi of Ace Concierge shared some awesome resources in a guest post she wrote for my blog titled So You Want To Be A Virtual Assistant.
3. Work-from-Home Job
If you’re looking for something that guarantees a weekly income and benefits, you might want a work-from-home job.
Let me tell you, work-from-home jobs have come a long way. Back in the day, the only at-home jobs you’d find were telemarketing and sales.
Now there are travel agents, nurses, transcriptions and tech support peeps.
But the most on-demand remote job is customer service. Take a look at these companies that let their employees work from home:
Micah Tek – Oklahoma residents only
Service 800 – FL, MN, TX, WI only.
SYKES Home Powered by Alpine Access – U.S. or Canada
Teleperformance – Worldwide
4. Side Hustles
Last but not least, for those who just want to work whenever they want to, there are side hustles you can do to make extra money.
The only downside to side hustles is the pay. You don’t make a lot of money. BUT if you do it consistently, you can earn as much as you would working part-time.
Over To You:
So those are the 4 great money makers you can do from home. And if you’ve been searching for an at-home opportunity, I hope this post was helpful to you.
Now let’s chat! Are you working from home? Do you want to work-from-home? Tell me about how’s work from home life or what you would like to do in the comments below.
Finally, before you go, I would really appreciate it if you’d share this post on social media, so other mamas can get a gander at these ideas as well.
