Mother-Daughter Spa Day with Homemade DIY Spa Products

What's the only thing better than a mother-daughter spa day with your little girl(s)? A spa day with homemade DIY spa products - bonding time that's fun AND inspiring!1. Dry winter hands? Try a DIY Sugar Scrub

One fun activity to help slough off that winter-dry skin from your hands is making your own sugar-scrub hand soap. All you need is

  • white granulated sugar
  • your favorite liquid dish soap (preferably a moisturizing variety)
  • a small bowl to mix it in
  • a wide-mouth jar to store it in

If the final product seems too liquid, you can mix in a little more sugar. If it’s too granular, add a little more dish soap and mix thoroughly. Store in an airtight wide-mouth jar, and use a small dab whenever you wash your hands. The soap will clean your hands, the sugar will help scrub off the dead skin cells, and your hands will feel softer and smoother. What's the only thing better than a mother-daughter spa day with your little girl(s)? Another idea you can try is running some plain uncooked oats (either quick-cooking or old-fashioned is fine) through the blender. Once they’re ground into a fine powder, stir some of the powder into your hand scrub. Oatmeal is renowned for its ability to lock in moisture, so this can give your scrub an extra moisturizing boost.

Spa party with many guests? Heat coconut oil in a small slow cooker, so it stays warm ’til you need it.

2. Chapped lips? Make some Homemade Lip Balm

A spa day with homemade DIY spa products - bonding time that's fun AND inspiring! After you make your sugar scrub for your winter-dry hands, you can mix up some homemade lip balm to pamper your chapped lips. For this, you’ll need

In a small bowl, combine all three ingredients thoroughly with a spoon, before the coconut oil cools and solidifies. Once cooled, store in a small airtight jar. To use, dab a small amount on your lips and spread evenly with your finger.

(And remind your girls as needed that the lip balm is NOT for eating!)

3. Need a relaxing soak and/or skin detox? Make your own Bath SaltsWhat's the only thing better than a mother-daughter spa day with your little girl(s)? A spa day with homemade DIY spa products - bonding time that's fun AND inspiring!

Finally, you can make your own bath salts at home, to finish off your spa day! All you’ll need is

so your bath salts have a nice scent and color. Personally, I’m a big fan of lavender for its ability to promote quality sleep.

You can also use Epsom salt by itself for a restorative bath or foot soak. Or check out other DIY spa products using Epsom salt near the end of this post, from facial and body scrubs to a blackhead treatment!

The ingredients in these DIY bath salts: magnesium sulfate, sodium chloride, and sodium bicarbonate.

Sneak some science learning into your spa day:

Yes, busy mamas may find a luxurious bath relaxing on its own merits. But this combination of bath salt ingredients does more than just alter your bath water. For starters, Epsom salt is not actually “salt,” but rather consists of magnesium sulfate (magnesium and sulfur). And that distinction is important.

a hunk of Dead Sea salt

So what does soaking in this combination of elements actually do that makes it so soothing? The magnesium in Epsom salt improves circulation, detoxes the skin, and soothes sore muscles. It can even help you sleep better at night. And both sea salts and baking soda can alleviate skin itchiness and dryness. In the case of sea salt, this has to do with all the trace minerals it often contains along with sodium chloride. I can confirm this firsthand; I remember my skin feeling so soft and smooth after an hour swimming in the Dead Sea.

Make it a party!

The girls and I totally want to do a spa-themed sleepover party for their friends at some point. So I put together some printable labels to go with these three DIY spa products. Each label includes directions for use, plus a list of ingredients.

  1. This looks so much fun ? I did use oats powder mixed with water or milk as my facial cleanser regularly instead of commercial face wash on days when my skin was not in good condition. It works great ☺ I liked all your DIY ideas ?

Homemade products are great if you are looking to enhance your beauty. I must say you are lucky to have daughter, it must be so great spending time with your daughter and working on DIY products.

  3. Lauren McAdam

Oh my gosh! My daughter will love to make some of these. She love’s bath bombs but we have never made our own bath salts. Thanks so much for sharing these.

  4. I don’t have a daughter to have a Mother/Daughter day, but this sounds like something great that my sister and I can do together. I’ll be with her in two weeks when I visit for my cousin’s graduation, so we may try some of this after the kids get to bed!

  5. Mmmm! A spa day. NOW THAT SOUNDS LOVELY. This girl needs a massage REAL soon – ha! I love to go to spas and massage places versus doing it at home because it gets me out of the house. However, DIY is always a great time if you’re strapped for time!

    1. haha yeah that’s a problem to get beyond before you can do this with her (truth be told, I was impressed/a tad surprised Kimmie didn’t try to eat some 😉 …)

    2. With Mother’s Day around the corner, this could be a great way to celebrate with mom and have a relaxing time. I love the idea of making our own spa items.
